Small-Space Tips

How to Measure Before You Buy Furniture

Most furniture returns come down to size. Five minutes with a tape measure prevents them.

Measure the space

Record width, depth and height of the area, including baseboards, outlets, vents and windowsills. Note where doors and drawers will swing.

Measure the path

Check every doorway, hallway and stair the box must pass through. Flat-packed furniture is easier, but long boxes still need room to turn.

Leave clearance

  • 30–36 inches for walkways
  • 18 inches between a sofa and coffee table
  • Drawer or door depth plus a few inches in front of cabinets
  • At least 24 inches per seat around a table

Use painter’s tape

Tape the footprint on the floor and live with it for a day. If you keep stepping around it, choose a slimmer option.

Check the listing

Every product page on matthewszt.com lists dimensions in inches and the item weight. If anything is unclear, email sales@matthewszt.com before you order.
