How to Choose a Bistro Set for a Small Patio or Balcony

A bistro set — two chairs and a small table — is the easiest way to turn a balcony, porch corner or small patio into a place you actually use. Here is how to choose one that fits.

Measure the space first

Allow roughly 24 inches of depth per chair plus the table, and keep at least 30 inches of clear walkway. For most two-seat sets that means a footprint of about 5 × 4 feet. Check door swings and railings before you buy.

Pick a material for your climate

  • Powder-coated metal is strong and slim; look for rust-resistant finishes in humid or coastal areas.
  • Acacia wood is warm and naturally durable, but benefits from oiling once or twice a season.
  • Resin wicker is lightweight and weather resistant, and often comes with storage side tables.

Rockers or fixed chairs?

Rocking chairs are wonderfully relaxing on a porch, but need a level surface and a little extra depth. Fixed chairs tuck closer to the table on a tight balcony.

Cushions and care

Quick-dry cushions save a lot of waiting after rain. Store cushions indoors when not in use and cover the set in winter to extend its life.
