Patio String Lights: A Simple Setup Guide

String lights change how an outdoor space feels after sunset. A little planning makes the difference between a sagging tangle and a clean, café-style canopy.

Plan your layout

Sketch the area and mark anchor points: the house, a fence, a tree or light poles. Common patterns are a perimeter loop, a zigzag across the patio and a center-point “tent”. Measure each run and add about 10% for drape.

Use poles where there is nothing to hang from

Metal light poles with fence brackets or ground stakes create anchor points anywhere. Guy lines or tension wire keep long runs from sagging.

Power and safety

  • Use outdoor-rated extension cords and a GFCI-protected outlet.
  • Never exceed the maximum number of connected strands listed on the packaging.
  • Keep connections off the ground and away from standing water.
  • Unplug the lights during storms and before replacing bulbs.

Dim for atmosphere

Dimmable LED strings let you go bright for dinner and low for conversation, and LED bulbs use a fraction of the power of incandescent ones.
